GRASS FED BEEF SALES

Our Cattle Ranch

Our cattle are raised naturally and sustainably free ranging on natural grass pastures on our 800 acre ranch north of Prince George BC. During the winter months they are fed timothy, orchard grass, and red clover hay that we grow ourselves. Our herd is small, allowing us to know and pay special attention to each individual cow and calf pair.  Our breeding herd is approximately 60 Angus cross cows that are bred to Angus bulls.

Our products are all natural and free of steroids, hormones and antibiotics.  We offer both grass finished or grain finished depending on your preference.

Each year, we keep approximately 10 of our best heifers over to add to the breeding herd and the rest are sold for food. We have our cattle butchered at a locally owned government inspected facility and if you pre-order we will work with you on how you would like the meat cut and wrapped. Remember we keep our cow numbers small so we can ensure each animal is well cared for, this means our supply is limited. We only butcher once a year so get your order soon to ensure you get what you want.

A 50% deposit is required to hold your order.

Grass VS Grain Finished

What’s the beef with grass versus grain finish?

This is a common question we get and honestly it comes down to personal preference.  Let’s break it down for you so you can make an informed decision on how you would like to see your beef finished.  It’s important to recognize that all our cows are fed a free-range natural grass diet.  When we talk about finishing the cow it just means what the animals are fed during the last 3 weeks, prior to being butchered.  There is debate as to whether grass finished vs grain finished is better for your health and the environment. Ultimately it’s personal preference and  with the real differences being the amount of fat and the variation in taste.

What is Grass Finished?

Grass-fed and grass-finished beef produces high quality earthy flavoured cuts that are leaner. And depending on which health expert you read from it may be slightly healthier. To be labelled as “grass fed” the  animal has to eat “grass and forage” exclusively (after weaning) and must have continuous access to pasture during the growing season. Hay and other harvested forage is allowed. One of the biggest differences is less fat.

What is Grain Finished?

You can also choose to have your beef “grain finished” with organically grains in which case we will feed it a combination of free access to grass and daily feedings of grains (primarily barley and corn) in the final 3 weeks prior to being butchered.  The grain is grown locally in the Vanderhoof and Dawson Creek areas.  This artisanal approach to grain-finishing produces high quality, deliciously marbled steaks with a flavor similar to more traditional beef.
